A tribute to Jimi Hendrix, an amazing night of danceable Soul
and a Brazilian Blues maestro coming to Tropic soon.

Dear Live Music Fan,

ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? - A tribute to Jimi Hendrix.

ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? are now in their 23rd year, and during that time they have become widely regarded as one of the best tribute shows on the circuit.

Guitarist John Campbell bears more than just a passing resemblance to Jimi, and has drawn upon many years of playing in different bands and exploring various styles to perfect his ‘Hendrix’ persona. When he plays his Strat behind his head and with his teeth, it brings a smile to the face of even the most finicky Hendrix fan.

As with any three piece rock band the rhythm section provides the all important foundation which allows John to improvise freely.

After playing together for over 20 years, Mark Arnold on bass guitar and Kevin O’Grady on drums are two of the best musicians around for this job. Kevin with his busy drumming style and Mark with his solid bass lines make up the Are You Experienced? sound.

Audience participation is always welcomed at gigs, and John inviting the ladies on stage to join the band for “Foxy Lady” has become an almost legendary part of their stage show.

The band like to throw in some of Jimi’s lesser known album tracks as well as the favourites to help keep the “die hard” fans happy, but if you’re a Jimi Hendrix fan, there’s something for everyone.

“Unnervingl Accuracy”

“The sound that came from his guitar was genuine talent”

“Wow! I mean Wow!”

As it says on the web site:-

“Brazilian blues rock guitarist Big Gilson’s is an electrifying guitar player and plays slide to die for “

Big Gilson & Blues Dynamite – Brazilian blues rock guitarist Big Gilson’s is an electrifying guitar player and plays slide to die for. He was was one of the forerunners of the blues in Brazil and has since played all over the world and has shared stages with some of the biggest blues and rock artists. Big Gilson is a recording artist for Top Cat Records in Dallas Texas and Mississippi Delta Blues Records in Brazil. “...When I see such a young man so far from America, playing the blues so well, I feel happy and proud that my mission in this life is done” B.B. King. .

He honed his chops gigging for many years in Brazil, Argentina, Europe and USA. He opened for Steve Winwood on his Brazilian tour, Johnny Winter and Johnny Rivers (70.000 people), and twice to the master B.B. King. While touring America, and gigging at such clubs as Florida’s Bamboo Room, New York’s Blue Note, and all over Chi-town, Big Gilson knocked out such blues gods as Corey Harries, Duke Robillard, Lonnie Brooks, Magic Slim, Saffire, Walter “Wolfman” Washington and Buddy Guy, who extended the boy from Brazil an open invitation to play his Legends Club anytime.

“...His slide playing is disturbingly virtuosic...” – Tim Schuller – MET MUSIC – Texas

...”This CD confirms Big Gilson as the best Brazilian blues guitarist” Jornal do Brasil

“...Excellent guitar solos full of feelings and powerful slide playing. He’s vibrato is super cool...” Guitar Player Magazine – Brazil

Derek was the bass player for Larry Miller and many other notable acts, and indeed he will no doubt be playing bass at this gig.

I expect this will be a seated show and gig timings are as usual so on stage at 9.30 pm.

Please do try and support these up coming Blues gigs where some more will be happening on Sundays starting in September.

Book now at http://www.tropicatruislip.co.uk/ or your usual web links, but remember there will be no acknowledgement until sometime after you have booked, but worry not we will get it. It is only £10 pre-booked.

Notwithstanding my comments last week about my now being able to come to the gig and see the brilliant John Campbell with his take on the music of  Jimi Hendrix I have taken the difficult decision to give it a miss.

One of the main factors in this is that Sam (see below) had booked himself a day off work to stand in for me and was "raring to go" and I did not want to steal his night off him. I also coupled that with the fact that South West Trains are taking industrial action AND that that my getting a train ticket up to London at short notice would mean the prices were much higher than I would usually be paying.

So this Friday I will be having a rare night off.

If you are coming to see Are You Experienced? then young Sam will be doing the first gig he has set up on his own, so if things are not exactly as they normally are be nice to him! Sam may be a familiar face to you as he has helped me before, but this is his first trip "flying solo".

Sam is an excellent musician and I am sure at some point will no doubt be at the other end of the room and appearing on stage!

We had a great night with the Bohemians as we always do, thanks to everyone that came. The "Sold Out" crowd all seemed to be having a great time.

If you were the person that found some keys and handed them in I am pleased to report they were returned to their rightful owner.

The Bohemians will return on Friday January 24th

I am sorry to have to report that John Green, who played the part of "Sting" in The Secret Police died suddenly on 15th June, where I think their last gig was on 9th June. I do not know anymore than I have read on Facebook but it must have been unexpected judging by the comments and the fact that they were playing live so recently.

The Secret Police have graced us five times over the years and would probably have been set for a return in 2020. My thoughts, right now, must lay with his family.

Best regards
